Eastern Coast: New York

New York: students will be visiting the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, New York Stock Exchange, the site of the World Trade Centre, United Nations, Central Park, Time Square and ChinaTown. The special talk will be given by Mr. Peter Yan, veteran reporter in New York.

United Nations

United Nations came into existence on 24th October 1945, the purposes of the United Nations are to maintain international peace and security; to develop friendly relations among nations; to cooperate in solving international economic, social, cultural and humanitarian problems and in promoting respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms; and to bea centre for harmonizing the actions of nations in attaining these ends.

China Town, New York City

New York City’s Chinatown, the largest Chinatown in the United States - and the site of the largest concentration of Chinese in the western hemisphere - is located on the lower east side of Manhattan. With a population estimated 150,000, Chinatown is the favored destination point for Chinese immigrants.

New York Stock Exchange (Wall Street)

New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) locates at 11 Wall Street. The NYSE traces its origins to 1792, when 24 New York City stockbrokers and merchants signed the Buttonwood Agreement. It is the largest stock exchange in the world by dollar volume and the second largest by number of companies listed. The New York Stock Exchange has a global capitalization of over $21 trillion.

Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on 28th October, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.

Times Squares

For the past century, Times Square has been a mecca for music and the arts. Times Square was home to the music publishing industry. The word "Broadway" means theater throughout the world. Broadway's shows represent the biggest, the brightest, and the most of their kind - popular live theater. Broadway's huge number of animated neon and television-style signage have long made it one of New York's iconic symbols, and a symbol of the intensely urban Manhattan.

World Trade Centre Site

The WorldTradeCenter was conceived in the early 1960s by the Downtown-Lower Manhattan Development Association to revitalize the seedy radio row dominated by electronic stores. Chase Manhattan Bank chairman David Rockefeller, founder of the development association, and his brother, New York governor Nelson Rockefeller, pushed hard for the project, insisting it would benefit the entire city.

In 1962, Minoru Yamasaki and Associates of Michigan were hired as architect. Eventually, Yamasaki decided on two huge towers and construction began in 1966.

The north tower was opened in Dec. 1970 and the south tower in Jan. 1972; they were dedicated in April 1973. The towers were ranked as the fifth and sixth tallest buildings in the world at the time of their destruction on September 11, 2001.

The design for the World Trade Centre Memorial was selected. Construction will begin in 2006, and the memorial is scheduled to open on September 11, 2009.
