According to legend, the name White House arose from the coats of heavy white paint used to cover the fire-blackened walls.Visitors are allowed to see only a few of the mansion’s 132 rooms. The Blue Room, where portraits of the first seven presidents hang, was the site of the first White House wedding, between President Grover Cleveland and Frances Folsom.Begun in 1792 as the first public building in Washington, the White House was completely renovated and restored from 1948 to 1952.

United States Naval Academy

The Naval Academy was founded in 1845 by the Secretary of the Navy, George Bancroft, in what is now historic Annapolis, MD. The history of the Academy has often reflected the history of the United States itself. As the U.S. Navy has moved from a fleet of sail and steam-powered ships to a high tech fleet of nuclear-powered submarines and surface ships as well as supersonic aircraft, the Academy has changed also. The NavalAcademy gives young men and women the up-to-date academic and professional training needed to be effective naval and marine officers in their assignments after graduation.

In 1850 the Naval School became the United States Naval Academy. Throughout the Academy’s history, the mission has remained focused on developing midshipment morally, mentally and physically into leaders of character for the Navy and Marine Corps.

The academy has expanded from ten acres to a 338-acre complex, from 50 midshipment to a brigade of approximately 4,200 midshipmen, and from seven to 600 faculty members (military and civilians). Nineteen academic majors are offered leading to abachelor of science degree for all graduates.

You will learn the long and distinguished naval history during the Naval Academy tour.
