Western Coast: Los Angeles

Los Angeles, often called simply L.A., is the most populous city in the state of California and the second-most populous in the United States. It is an alpha world city having a population of approximately four million people and spanning 1290 km²). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Los Angeles metropolitan statistical area has a total area of 4,850 square miles (12,600 km²) and is home to roughly 13 million people.

 

Hollywood

Hollywood is a district in Los Angeles, California, situated west-northwest of Downtown. Due to its fame and cultural identity as the historical center of movie studios and stars, the word "Hollywood" is often used as a metonym for the American film and television industry. Today much of the movie industry has dispersed into surrounding areas such as Burbank and the Westside, but significant ancillary industries (such as editing, effects, props, post-production, and lighting companies) remain in Hollywood.

Any historic Hollywood theaters are used as venues to premiere major theatrical releases, and host the Academy Awards. It is a popular destination for nightlife and tourism, and home to the Walk of Fame.

 


San Diego

San Diego is a coastal Southern California city located in the southwestern corner of the continental United States. As of 2006, the city has a population of 1.3 million people. It is the second largest city in California and the eighth largest in the United States. The larger metropolitan area is the seventeenth-largest in the United States, with a population over 2.9 million. It lies just north of the Mexican border (shares border with Tijuana, Mexico), and is a home for United States Navy, United States Coast Guard and United States Marine Corps bases, many miles of beaches, and a mild Mediterranean climate. The annual mean temperature is 64.4 degrees Fahrenheit (18°C). San Diego's economy centers on tourism, trade, agriculture, ship-building, the military, biotechnology, computer science and electronics.

The Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, located in San Diego, California is a city park which attempts to recreate life in San Diego from 1821 to 1872. During this time period, San Diego was California's first Spanish settlement, with a mission and fort already established there in 1769. For this reason, the park's design incorporates Spanish styles and early American architecture.

San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum – The USS Midway

The Midway was an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, the lead ship of her class, and the first to be commissioned after the end of World War II.Active in the Vietnam War and in Operation Desert Storm, as of 2006 she is a museum ship in San Diego, California.

Midway was laid down October 27,1943 by Newport News Shipbuilding Co., Newport News, Virginia. Her revolutionary hull design was based on what would have been the Montana class battleships and gave her superior maneuverability over all previous carriers. She was launched March 20, 1945; sponsored by Mrs. Bradford William Ripley, Jr.; and commissioned September 10, 1945, Captain Joseph F. Bolger in command.

Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood is the original Universal Studios theme park, created initially to offer tours of the real Universal Studios soundstages and sets. It has since evolved into a fully-fledged theme park, and has spawned several others including a Universal Studios Orlando, Universal Studios Japan and Universal Studios Singapore which will be completed by 2010.
